Since this issue goes into distribution the day before Thanksgiving, allow me to wish you a very happy holiday season. It is a tradition at my family's holiday dinners to count our blessings and discuss things that make us happy. Here are some of the things for which I am grateful, in no particular order:

1. The United States - I love this country and the freedom and privileges associated with being a resident and a citizen. I like to see our flag and hear our national anthem. The song I'm Proud to be an American brings tears to my eyes. As much as I enjoy visiting other countries, coming home is always a pleasure. On Thanksgiving, I send a special salute to our veterans.

2. Dancing - What a great hobby! Whether it be disco dancing, ballroom dancing, or line dancing, count me in!

3. Poker, poker, poker - Much of my free time is spent in cardrooms, and I still love to play the game. I am especially grateful for cardrooms that enforce no-abuse policies.

4. Computers - Although I am by no means a computer genius, I really like my computer. Through e-mail, I can stay in touch with friends and family, as well as maintain contact with readers and business associates. Lots of information is at our fingertips through these great machines.

5. Material things - OK, I admit it, I'm thankful for things like microwave ovens, chenille sweaters, television (especially Survivor and The Practice), remote control, sushi, electric blankets, cruises, Jacuzzis, ATVs, shopping, bifocals, and cellular phones. You get the picture.

6. Professionals - Doctors, lawyers, teachers, firemen, police officers, poker dealers … in fact, I am grateful for anyone who has a job and performs it well.

7. Senior citizens - I visited a friend in Leisure World recently. It was a pleasure talking to her group of friends, who were all quite interesting.

8. Nature - Sunsets, beautiful beaches, wild flowers, waterfalls, and volcanoes all enhance the beauty of our world.

9. Friends - Friendship is a blessing. I am blessed to have so many wonderful friends in my life. You know who you are, and you know I am grateful for you.

10. Family - Holidays are great times to get together with family; so is every day of the year. I have always said I was "lucky at birth." Thanks, Mom. Thanks, Diana. Thanks, Rich.

I hope you take a few moments during the holidays to reflect on some of the things for which you are grateful.

Now, let's play poker!diamonds
