The 2012 World Poker Tour Lucky Hearts Poker Open Main Event attracted 295 players to the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood, Florida, building a $958,750 prize pool. In the end it was Florida native Matt Juttelstad who emerged victorious, earning $268,444, a WPT Champions Trophy, and a trophy from the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, and 684 Card Player Player of the Year points.
Juttelstad had taken a year off from poker, but decided to play the $3,500 buy-in event because he was in the area for an interview at Florida Atlantic University. His first run at the tournament proved unsuccessful, but after his interview finished faster than planned, he decided to re-enter on Day 1B. That turned out to be a good idea, as he is now a WPT champion with $268,444 more to put towards tuition.
Juttelstad entered the final table of this event second in chips, but by the time he got to heads up play he had a more than 3-to-1 advantage over Gigi Gagne. Gagne entered the day as the chip leader, and was looking to become the first ever female to win an open WPT event. In the final hand, Juttelstad limped for 80,000, and Gagne checked. The flop rolled out 532, and Gagne lead out for 300,000. Juttelstad called and the turn brought the A. Gagne moved all-in, and Juttelstad snap-called with the 64 for a flopped nut-straight. Gagne had a four in her hand for the five-high straight, but was drawing dead to a chop. The river card was the 8, ensuring Juttelstad’s victory and sending Gagne to the rail as the runner-up with $158,194.
