The Springfield City Council is currently reviewing MGM Resorts International’s proposed changes to its $800 million casino, according to a report from wwlp.com.
MGM wants to reduce the size of its casino project by about 14 percent, or 122,000 square feet, according to the report. A new hotel would be roughly 25,000 square feet smaller; the convention space would be cut by 2,100 square feet; and the retail space would drop by 20,480 square feet. The proposed parking garage would also lose a floor and 387 spaces.
The hotel would go from a planned 25 floors to just six floors and be located in a different part of the property.
The report said that only four of the 13 city council members have indicated that they will approve the new plan, but most are still on the fence. They will meet again Thursday.
According to masslive.com, some council members have called the proposed changes “unacceptable.” The proposed changes would also need state approval.
MGM Springfield officials said the changes will not break any guarantees of jobs or revenue.
The casino operator also recently threw its hat into the ring for a new casino in neighboring Connecticut, which would be that state’s third casino.
