Las Vegas-based casino giant MGM Resorts said this week that it will be spending $150 million more than it originally planned to build a new casino in Massachusetts.

According to The Boston Globe, the total cost of the Springfield project now stands at $950 million. MGM has taken some criticism lately from local officials over the planned project and the delays it has experienced.

MGM said last month that it wanted to reduce the size of the project. MGM announced plans for cutting 122,000 square feet from the property, scaling back the parking garage a floor and trimming the hotel from 25 floors to six floors. There would still be the same number of hotel rooms on the property, the company said.

The planned changes reportedly won’t significantly affect the gaming floor, which is expected to include 3,000 slot machines, 75 table games and a poker room.

MGM needs approval from the Springfield City Council and the state Gaming Commission on the changes. The company said that construction delays have increased the cost of the project.
