Bad Beats Becoming an Absolute Blessing

Absolute Poker's Recently Instituted Bad Beat Jackpot Already Hit Twice

Having quads or better beaten in a game of poker can be devastating, especially considering that the pots for such hands tend to be enormous. Absolute Poker aimed to change the tone of its players' bad beat stories with its recently instituted Bad Beat Jackpot tables, and within days of the promotion's inception, the jackpot has already been hit - three times.

Absolute Poker initially seeded the jackpot with $100,000, and it was hit in less than 24 hours. CGA11 won $38,000 from the jackpot prize pool when his quad tens were beaten by NEDKELLY's straight flush. NEDKELLY won the pot and an additional $19,000 from the jackpot and the other players at the table shared $19,000.

Here's how that hand played out: CGA11 raised preflop at a $0.50-$1 no-limit hold'em table with pocket tens and got three callers, NEDKELLY (Q 9), WALLEYEKILL (K Q), and GREYCODE (A K). The flop came K J 10, a huge flop for the players' holdings. Two players had top pair, CGA11 flopped a set, and NEDKELLY flopped a straight. After a lot of action on the flop, which eventually folded GREYCODE, the turn brought the 8. WALLEYEKILL got all in and both NEDKELLY and CGA11 called, and the river was the unlikely 10, giving CGA11 quad tens, but also improving NEDKELLY to a straight flush. CGA11 pushed all in and NEDKELLY called, of course, and the jackpot was hit.

Seventy percent of the jackpot's prize pool is paid out to the winning table when the jackpot is hit (with 50 percent of that going to the bad beat victim, 25 percent to the winner of the hand, and 25 percent to the rest of the table). Of the remaining 30 percent, 20 percent is kept in the prize pool for the next jackpot winner and 10 percent goes to the house.

The jackpot was then reseeded for almost $22,000, but that didn't last long, as the jackpot was hit again less than 48 hours later, once the prize pool had reached more than $37,000. MARKM3451's four of a kind was the victim of WHITETAIL0's king-high straight flush and MARKM3451 earned nearly $13,000 for his misfortune. The jackpot was again reseeded and hit for a third time shortly thereafter by KMSTAAB3, who won almost $9,000 for his losing hand.

To qualify for the jackpot (according to Absolute Poker's most current terms), players must play on the special Bad Beat Jackpot tables and have quad eights or better beaten. Both holecards must play from both the winning and losing hand and the hand must go to showdown. At least four players must be dealt cards in the hand and rake must be collected from the hand for it to qualify.

Absolute Poker is the only online poker site open to U.S. players to feature Bad Beat Jackpot tables. Full details on the latest addition to Absolute Poker's suite of poker games can be found by clicking here.
