Well-known Londoner Neil “Bad Beat” Channing took down the €3 Million PaddyPowerPoker.com Irish Open in Citywest Hotel, Dublin, yesterday, earning his biggest payday ever. The Victoria casino cash game regular lifted the trophy and the €801,400 first prize by making his 2-1 chip lead pay off over local lad Donal Norton.
Norton, from Tipperary, Ireland, won €420,000 for his second-place finish. In the deciding hand, Norton moved all-in from the small blind, and Channing called. Channing turned over A-9 and Norton flipped up pocket fives. The flop was a decisive A-Q-10, giving Channing the lead in a tournament-deciding pot. The turn was a king and river an ace, and Channing was pronounced the champ.
Channing entered the day as chip leader and 4-5 favourite with sponsor Paddy Power.
The event was broadcast on Irish national TV, RTE TWO, and attracted 667 players, including some of the biggest names in the game, such as Doyle Brunson, Padraig Parkinson, Ciaran O’Leary, Noel Furlong, Andy Black, Roland De Wolfe, Sorel Mizzi, Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott, and defending champion Marty Smyth.
Paddypowerpoker.com added €200,000 to the prize pool to bring the total to €3,001,400.
