London’s iconic Hippodrome building in Leicester Square is to become a casino complete with poker room according to a report in the Guardian newspaper on Tuesday.
The £8 million plan by Hippodrome Casinos has received full planning permission and the company won an appeal in the high court which challenged the decision. The venue, which is over 100 years old and was most recently home to Peter Stringfellow’s famous nightclub and alternative circus La Clique, will house slot machines, a poker room, gaming tables, cabaret bar and a Gordon Ramsey restaurant.
Simon Thomas, chairman of Hippodrome Casinos, told the Guardian that, “"London has a lot of hard gambling casinos but we are not going for the big gamblers. We think our customers will only spend a little over £30 a head. Our customers will get the opportunity to see some free cabaret, see a beautiful building, have a little flutter - we are not looking at the high end."
