Following in the footsteps of his father, Julian Gardner became a professional gambler. He started going to casinos at age 15 and won numerous poker tournaments by the time he was 21, the legal age in the United States. He began making the pilgrimage overseas to play in the World Series of Poker in 2000. He did not cash his first year and missed 2001, but he made history in the 2002 main event. He placed second and became the youngest player at the time to win more than $1 million at the WSOP.
Gardner continued his run at the championship title and cashed in the 2003 and 2004 main events, making him the only player to do so in all three of those years. In 2007, he placed 64th in the main event, which was good for more than $130,000.
