Level 10 Update: Last Level of the NightDec 15, '09 Blinds: 1,000-2,000 with a 200 ante Players Remaining: 131 out of 329 Chip Counts: 1. Faraz Jaka — 360,000 Average Chip Count: 151,000 Notable Eliminations: David Sands Big Hands: Tom Dwan Takes Huge Hit, Still Big Stack Tom Dwan raised to 5,300 and Matt Stout made the call. The flop came down AAK and Dwan continued with a bet of 7,200. Stout called and the turn was the 5. Dwan checked and Stout bet 18,000. Dwan took about a minute before calling and the river was the 6. Dwan checked, Stout fired in 38,500 and Dwan went into the tank. After another two minutes, he finally called and mucked his hand when Stout showed AQ. Stout’s stack was boosted to a more than healthy 238,000, while Dwan took a hit down to 205,000. Alec Torelli Eliminated By Tim Davis On a flop of A82, Alec Torelli found himself all in with Ad4d against the A6 of Tim Davis. The turn was the 7, giving Torelli a flush draw and nearly every other card in the deck for chop outs. Unfortunately, the river was the 6, pairing Davis and sending Torelli packing from the tournament. Amnon Filippi Wins Most of Monster Pot, Vivek Rajkumar Gets Bad Beat Vivek Rajkumar raised to 5,100 and was called by Amnon Filippi on the button and Tim Davis in the big blind. The flop came down Kh8s6h and Rajkumar continued with a bet. Filippi then moved all in and Davis made the call. Rajkumar then put Davis all in for an additional 31,000 or so and Davis made the call. Rajkumar showed the best hand with 86, Filippi showed the nut flush draw with A9 and Davis was in trouble with J8. The turn was the 9, giving Filippi more outs and he got there when the K hit the river. Filippi’s kings and nines gave him the main pot and stack of 150,000. Also, Rajkumar’s two pair was counterfeited, giving Davis the side pot. After paying everyone off, Rajkumar is still more than comfortable with 193,000. Left In the Deck: David “Sir Sands” Sands was noticeably absent from his table and went we asked big stacked Kenna James about it, he sheepishly admitted to doing the damage. Mike Matusow then chimed in, explaining that it wasn’t James who busted him, but that Sands busted himself. Joe Elpayaa and Isaac Baron both started laughing, but were in agreement that perhaps Sands played a bit too fast and loose with his former 170,000 stack. Card Player TV: Kristy Arnett recently caught up with Steve Zolotow to discuss the tournament’s structure and late registration policy. Nathan Doudney vs. Jason Mercier Eliminations: 16. Jason Mercier – $38,424 Big Hands: Jamin Stokes Knocks Out Alec Torelli Alec Torelli and Jamin Stokes got all the money in preflop and the cards were exposed. Torelli Showed the A6, but was dominated by the A9. The board ran out 99862 and left Torelli out of the round 6. Wolpert Doubles Up to Take Lead, Later Busts Clavet The turning point in this match was when all the money got in preflop and Leo Wolpert showed the A 10 against the A 9 of Mathieu Clavet. The board came out Q J 10 3 4 and Wolpert left Clavet on the short stack. The final blow was dealt when Wolpert raised from the button and Clavet moved all in. Wolpert called and his AK was ahead of the 78 of Clavet. The board ran out K 3 5 6 6 and Wolpert will move on to the next round. John Duthie Picks up Aces to Take out Benjamin Sprenger Earlier in the hour, John Duthie took the chip lead by getting all of his money in preflop with A 2 against the A J of Sprenger and hitting a 2 on the turn to take the lead. The final blow came when all the money got in preflop with Duthie holding the AA and Sprenger tabled the QJ. The flop was 4J6, but Sprenger failed to improve any further as the turn was the 2 and the river was the A. O’Dwyer Busts Romanello to End the Night After being on the short stack for a while, Steve O’Dwyer got all of his money in the middle preflop with J10 against Roberto Romanello’s AQ. The board ran out JK392 to give him a slight chip advantage. From that point on, O’Dwyer slowly chipped up and eventually built a formidable stack. The final hand of the night was when O’Dwyer limped in on the button and Romanello raised to 100,000. O’Dwyer raised the rest of Romanello’s chips and Romanello made the call with his last 160,000. O’Dwyer showed the AJ and Romanello showed the J10. The flop contained an A and that was it, as O’Dwyer advances to the next round. Player Tags: John Duthie, Jamin Stokes, Leo Wolpert, Alec Torelli, Steve O'Dwyer, Roberto Romanello Hour 4 Update: Vanessa Rousso Eliminated, Alec Torelli AdvancesJun 14, '09 Hour 4 Update Players Remaining: 33 out of 256 Completed Round 3 Matches (Winner in Bold): 1. Rousso went into the tank before finally calling with ace-six. Roberts tabled pocket fives and they held up to eliminate the 2009 NBC National Heads Up runner-up. Alec Torelli Advances The short stack of Joao Barbosa moved all-in preflop and Alec Torelli went into the tank. He said, “this is going to be a close one.” He eventually made the call and exposed the A2 and was slightly ahead of the Q9 of Barbosa. The flop was ugly for Barbosa as it came A54, giving the Event No. 2 (40,000 no-limit hold’em) sixth place finisher a pair of aces. The 7 hit the turn and the 8 fell on the river. Mike Caro Doubles Up Approaching almost four hours of play, Mike Caro went all-in with the AQ and was instantly called by Alexey Popov with A8. Caro survived the hand and doubled up to a 2-1 chip lead but the heads up match shows little signs of ending soon. Their match is the only one still going from round three. If the Caro vs. Popov match has not ended by then, the rest of the field will still begin the next round. Player Tags: Mike Caro, Vanessa Rousso, Alec Torelli, Evan Roberts, Joao Barbosa |

Lex Veldhuis — 530,000 Average Chip Count: 171,000 Notable Eliminations: Adam “csimmsux” Geyer Big Hands: Jason Mercier Takes Out Adam Geyer Antonio Esfandiari raised to 6,400 from the cutoff and Adam Geyer reraised to 17,000 on the button. The action moved to Jason Mercier who reraised from the small blind. Esfandiari folded and Geyer reluctantly moved in for his last 30,000 or so. Mercier flipped up pocket aces and Geyer showed down pocket queens. The board ran out K10542 giving no help to the three-time FTOPS champion and Geyer was eliminated. Mercier now has 255,000 in chips. David Baker Chips Up On a board reading 952A Isaac Haxton bet 15,000. David “WhooooKidd” Baker stared his opponent down and decided to make the call. The river was the J and Haxton went into the tank. After about three minutes of dead silence, he tapped the table and Baker followed suit. Haxton turned over 76 for a missed straight draw and Baker showed K9 to take the pot with third pair. Baker now has 247,000 in chips. Andy Bloch Getting Picked on by Alec Torelli After losing a big pot earlier to Torelli, Bloch checked a board showing J1047k. Torelli launched a bet of 25,000 and Bloch went into a massive tank session. After almost 10 minutes, Bloch made the call. Torelli flipped over KJ for top two pair. Bloch mucked and his stack dwindled to 17,000. Torelli was at 250,000. A few hands later, Bloch doubled up with pocket kings against his opponent’s ace-queen. Chris Moore Doubles Through Andy Black Andy Black raised to 6,000 from the hijack. Chris Moore was next to act and move in for his last 30,000. Black talked to Moore for a bit before making the call and showing 55. More showed AJ and the board ran out J610Q4, giving Moore top pair and doubling him up to 60,000. Black took a slight hit, leaving his stack at 350,000. “Action” Jeff Garza Sent Home By Phil Galfond Jeff Garza was all in and called holding A-Q but was dominated by Phil Galfond’s superior A-K. The board rolled out nine high offering no help to the recently turned 21 Garza. Galfond now has a stack of 320,000. Phil Hellmuth Crippled By Alan “The Usher” Sass Alan Sass raised to 5,500 and Phil Hellmuth reraised to 15,000 directly behind him. Sass made the call and the flop came out 654. Sass led into Hellmuth for 19,400 and Hellmuth called. The turn was the K and Sass checked. Hellmuth fired in a bet of 35,000 and Sass called. The river was the Q and Hellmuth moved all in for 183,000, which had Sass covered by about 37,000. Sass called showing K9 and Hellmuth mucked his hand. After the hand, Hellmuth pulled one of our reporters aside to admit that he held A-7 for a busted open-ended straight draw. “I’d get penalized for saying this at the table, but I just wanted to let it be known that the most horrible players in the world usually beat me,” said Hellmuth. The hand drew further attention when it was revealed that the dealer had miscounted the all-in stacks, giving Sass some more of Hellmuth chips. Hellmuth, clearly upset, responded with, “What are you trying to give it all to him?” Not quite, as Hellmuth still has about 37,000 in chips. Russell Rosenblum Doubles Up Russell Rosenblum found himself and his stack of about 100,000 all in preflop holding pocket kings against the pocket jacks of Philippe Rouas. The kings held and Rosenblum safely doubled up to about 210,000. The river brought the 5 and Negreanu checked. Steicke thought for awhile and then bet 20,000 into the 50,000 chip pot. Negreanu immdediately looked disgusted and went into the tank saying, “You must have a flush.” Negreanu eventually folded and Steicke said he had a flush and gut shot straight draw on the turn. Negreanu is down to under 40,000 in chips. Left In The Deck: Phil Hellmuth has just taken his seat after an almost 3 level absence. Player Tags: J.C. Chriss made the call showing A4 and was temporarily ahead of Torelli’s 87 for an open-ended straight draw. But the turn and river came 59 giving Torelli the winning straight and making Chriss the bubble boy. Vanessa Rousso Eliminated in 27th Place ($71,858) J.C. Tran Eliminated in 26th Place ($71,858) J.C. Tran raised to 105,000, basically committing the rest of his stack. Matt Marafioti then reraised to 700,000, more than enough to put him all in. Tran called with QJ and was crushed by Marafioti’s QQ. To add insult to injury, the case queen hit the flop and Marafioti went on to make a full house, eliminating Tran from the tournament. Sorel Mizzi Eliminated in 25th Place ($71,858) Sorel Mizzi and David Baker got in all in preflop with Baker having the bigger stack. Mizzi showed QQ and Baker showed AK. The flop came 543 and Mizzi kept the lead, until the turn and river came KA giving Baker the winning two pair. The hand drew further attention when it was revealed that the dealer had miscounted the all-in stacks, giving Sass some more of Hellmuth chips. Bloch mucked and his stack dwindled to 17,000. Torelli was at 250,000. A few hands later, Bloch doubled up with pocket kings against his opponent’s ace-queen. After the hand, Moneymaker was down to just 230,000 while Guoga chipped up to over 830,000. Humberto Brenes Taken Out By Greg Raymer Humberto Brenes moved all in on the short stack from the cutoff and Greg Raymer made the call in the small blind. The action moved to Andrew Robl in the big blind, who appeared to be contemplating a call. After a while, some members of the table got up and Robl realized the action was on him. He quickly folded and Brenes showed A-7 offsuit. Raymer revealed pocket nines and they held to bust THE CHARK from the tournament. Chris Moneymaker Gives Up Some Chips to Noah Schwartz Noah Schwartz was all in on the short stack holding pocket kings against the pocket sevens of Chris Moneymaker. David Chiu Eliminated in 21st Place ($71,858) Riding a shorter stack of 415,000, David Chiu raised under the gun to 60,000. Alec Torelli, on Chiu’s immediate left, re-raised 92,000 more. Chiu went into the tank, counted out his chips, and eventually just made the call. The flop came A79 and Chiu instantly went all in for about 150,000 more. Torelli instantly called and exposed the QQ. Chiu turned over the A7 and was slightly ahead. Torelli hit perfect on the turn with the 8. Chiu failed to hit his full house to catch up as the 6 hit the river. Torelli’s stack grew to 1,435,000. Townsend Moves All-in, Thinks He lost Holding the A8, Brian Townsend moved all-in for about 600,000 from the button and was called by the A10 of Clark Hamagami. Hamagami was well out in front on a flop of J94. The K fell on the turn and Townsend was drawing very thin. The 4 fell on the river, giving the players a split pot because Hamagami’s ten kicker didn’t play. However, Townsend got up from the table and was about to leave, thinking he was knocked out, when players at the table informed him that it was a chop. Neil Chriss Becomes Unfortunate Bubble Boy Alec Torelli raised to 50,000 on the button and both Neil Chriss and Greg Raymer came along in the blinds. The flop came out A96 and Chriss led out for 100,000. Raymer folded and Torelli moved all in, putting Chriss to the test. Torelli is still a live, but in considerably worse shape with 375,000. Moneymaker Hurting After Tony G Double Up Tony G was all in holding A-K against Chris Moneymaker’s pocket queens. The board ran out 8-6-2-K-J, giving Guoga the winning pair of kings and taking a huge chunk of Moneymaker’s stack. Ted Forrest Wakes Up, Gets Moneymaker’s Stack After sleeping through most of the past two levels, Ted Forrest finally returned to the tournament and almost immediately took the rest of Chris Moneymaker’s chips. Moneymaker made his move with pocket tens and Forrest held pocket kings. Both players flopped a set when it came K-J-10 and the turn and river ran out 7-J to give both players a full house. Moneymaker’s was lower and he was ousted from the tournament. Forrest now has about 1.1 million in chips. Greg Raymer Cruises Past 2 Million By Taking Out Steve Zolotow Very reminiscent of 2004, Greg Raymer just can’t seem to lose coinflips today. After putting the all in pressure on Steve Zolotow and his 600,000+ stack, Zolotow made a good call with QQ. Raymer turned over AK and was once again in a race situation for a huge pot. The flop came out 422 which someone at the table mentioned was a good flop for Zolotow. Sure enough, the next card off was the K and Zolotow slammed the table. The river 2 have both players a boat, but Raymer’s was best, busting Zolotow from the tournament. Raymer now has 2.38 million in chips. Alec Torelli Picks Up a Big Pot With an All-In Move Greg Raymer opened from early position to 30,000 and Vanessa Rousso made the call. Brian Rast then raised to 105,000 in the hijack and the action moved over to Alec Torelli. After a few minutes in thought, Torelli moved all in for 810,000. Raymer quickly folded, as did Rousso. Rast asked for a count, saw that his 650,000 was well covered and the folded. Torelli moved up to approximately 960,000. Phil Galfond Doubles Through Justin Bonomo Phil Galfond found himself all in holding a dominating A-K against Justin Bonomo and his A-J. A king hit the flop and Bonomo failed to catch up, doubling Galfond to 488,000 in chips. Bonomo is still healthy with about 1.1 million. Sami Kelopuro Doubles Up Courtesy of Alan Sass After an all-in and call, Sami Kelopuro revealed his pocket queens and was way ahead of Alan Sass and his pocket eights. The board ran out Q63J4 and Kelopuro’s set of queens were enough to double him up to about 375,000 in chips. Chris Moneymaker Gives Up Some Chips to Noah Schwartz Noah Schwartz was all in on the short stack holding pocket kings against the pocket sevens of Chris Moneymaker. The board failed to help the 2003 champion and Schwartz doubled up to 320,000. Moneymaker dropped below the million mark with 910,000. Sorel Mizzi Doubles Through Frank Kassela On a flop of J107 Sorel Mizzi is all in holding J-10 for top two pair against Frank Kassela’s and his pocket eights. Seed was severely short stacked and moved all-in the next hand with 76 from the button only to be called by Greg Raymer in the small blind with K9. Seed failed to hit and was knocked out of Event 2 of the World Series of Poker. Nam Le Doubles Up Nam Le and Sorel Mizzi got it all in on the flop with Le holding the 107 and Mizzi holding the KQ.
