Analysis

Despite a scary card on the end, Andrew Hulme stuck with the plan and went for three streets of value with pocket queens. He managed to get called by worse, knocking out a tough competitor in current Card Player Player of the Year race contender David Coleman in the process. The hand began with it folding around to Hulme in the small blind. He raised to nearly 3x the big blind and Coleman came along with J-9 offsuit. He flopped jacks and threes and called Hulme’s continuation bet. The turn brought a blank and Hulme unleashed his second barrel, keeping it on the smaller side with a sizing of just a bit over third pot. The pot grew to seven million, while Coleman had just three million remaining in his stack. The ASpade Suit on the end completed the flush draw from the flop and put an overcard to Hulme’s two queens on the board. Despite those facts, the effective stack-to-pot ratio still left Hulme inclined to shove on the end. Coleman’s jacks and threes with the ace kicker from the board amounted to a bluff catcher at this point, but he seemed to decide that Hulme might have enough bluffs in his range to make it correct to put on the cape. Coleman made the hero call and was shown the bad news. The American poker pro earned $442,835 for his fifth-place showing. This was his 21st appearance at a final table in 2024, with more than $3.6 million in POY earnings accrued across those scores. Hulme was already in the lead before this hand and wound up with twice as many chips as the second-largest stack after sending Coleman to the rail.
