Gus Hansen Avoids Disaster on Full Tilt Poker

Poker Pro Regains Momentum after Dropping $1 Million Late Last Week

Gus HansenEarlier this week it seemed like Gus Hansen’s 2011 heater was finally over. The Full Tilt Poker pro had dropped about $1 million of his profits, bringing his earnings for the year back down to the $3 million mark. However, over the past couple of days, Hansen recovered the losses and now sits with about $4 million in earnings once again — still tops in online poker this year.

The week started off with a mix of unfortunate pot-limit Omaha and limit deuce-to-seven triple draw sessions. In a match versus Abe “EazyPeazy” Mosseri and Lance84 on Sunday, Hansen was guillotined all the way to just $1,800, while his opponents held well over six figures. Hansen kept reloading, but he wasn’t able to escape the pounding.

After being obliterated on the last draw over and over again, Hansen lost some more money at the Omaha tables, which included a rough session versus Tom “durrrr” Dwan at $300-$600 pot limit. Combined with other lackluster matches, Hansen had dumped seven figures back into the online community.

Hansen’s online poker career has been marred by hot starts to begin a calendar year, only to have the winnings exterminated and finish the year in a massive hole. It appeared, at least for a few days this past week, that Hansen was going to be the victim of another devastating turn of events. However, Hansen regained the virtual momentum and recovered all the way back to the $4 million plateau.

Phil Galfond

The recovery was aided by a Wednesday battle with Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond at $300-$600 pot-limit Omaha. In the biggest pot of the session, Hansen out flopped Galfond’s KSpade Suit KDiamond Suit 10Heart Suit 5Spade Suit with the 8Club Suit 4Club Suit 7Heart Suit 3Heart Suit. His eights and fours held after two runs, and Hansen raked in the $121,000 pot. Hansen played well but also was the beneficiary of numerous coolers throughout the session: “I have been good at the cold-decks against you,” he told Galfond in the chat.

Trailing Hansen this year for the lead in online profits is still Dan “jungleman12” Cates with about $2 million. Other big winners include Gavin “gavz101” Cochrane and Matt Hawrilenko (each with about $1.8 million in profits), and Phil Ivey (+$1.3 million).

The biggest losers so far in 2011 include Dwan (-$2.5 million), Kagome Kagome (-$1.8 million), fishosaurusREX (-$1.4 million), and cadillac1944 (-$1.3 million). Dwan and Kagome Kagome each dropped about $275,000 over the past seven days.
