Monarch Gaming is the latest company to seek entry into an upcoming intrastate poker industry in Nevada, according to a source at the Gaming Control Board.

The company is seeking to be an operator of online poker — an opportunity limited to already existing brick-and-mortar licensees in the Silver State.

Service providers — companies in charge of maintaining and running the software component to the business — can be new to Nevada and partner with a casino.

Monarch Casino & Resort, Inc. owns and operates the Atlantis in Reno, Nevada. Card Player could not reach the company for comment.

Before Monarch Gaming, the last company to formally apply to regulators was Aristocrat Technologies.

South Point Poker is so far the only other company, besides Monarch Gaming, to formally apply to be an operator.

The Control Board is already reviewing submitted paperwork, but it is unclear when the first application could be brought to the Gaming Commission for approval.

While applications are still trickling in, regulators are fine-tuning the details for the industry after the framework was finalized in late December. They are also preparing to draft rules for the private testing of Internet poker sites.
