Greece’s new gaming law has come under fire from the Remote Gambling Association which has challenged tax rules which it says are “equivalent to a market entry fee”.

The Greek Council of State challenge has been signed by Betfair, Willaim Hill and Bet365 who are unhappy at the proposed retrospective tax to be levied on revenues earned in Greece dating back to January 1, 2010.

Additionally licensed operators (when licenses are eventually announced) will have to pay a retrospective 10 percent withholding tax on Greek-customer winnings up to December 16, 2011.

In a statement the Remote Gambling Association said, “This provision is equivalent to a market entry fee that will have to be paid by all of the operators who have until now been unable to obtain a licence to operate in Greece.”

Greece has been proposing online gaming legislation, including a tax on online poker winnings, since 2009.
