A total of 16 players put up the sizable six-figure buy-in, and were sorted into two separate groups. Each group played four heats, with their finishes in these heats determining who would make the final table and with how many chips. After all of these preliminary rounds, the final table was decided, with a number of big names including Seiver, Cates, Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Sam Trickett and Phil Laak.
Cates and Seiver scored the majority of the knockout blows, accumulating chips until they arrived at heads-up play with just over one big blind in difference between their two stacks. Seiver found a way to pull out to a 2-to-1 lead when the final hand arose, with the two players getting all the money in on what amounted to a coin flip: Cates was ahead with pocket sevens against the KQ
of Seiver. Cates’ pair kept the lead until the river, when the K
fell to give Seiver the pot, the title and the $500,000 first place prize. Seiver now has lifetime tournament earnings of nearly $5.4 million.
