After a grueling and swing-filled heads-up battle Igor Kurganov has won the 2012 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino European Poker Tour Grand Final €25,000 high roller title, defeating Daniel Negreanu heads-up for the win, the €1,080,000 ($1,428,300) first-place prize and 924 Card Player Player of the Year points.
Heads-up play continued for more than two and a half hours, with multiple lead-changes. Negreanu began with the chip lead, but Kurganov made number of big hands ultimately wrest the advantage from the Canadian pro.
On the final hand, Negreanu got the last of his chips in with the AJ and Kurganov called the six big-blind shove with K3. The board ran out K54510, giving Kyrganov top pair to take the pot and the title.
For his second place finish Negreanu earned €598,600 ($791,649) and 770 POY points.
This was Negreanu’s fourth final table appearance of 2012, and as a result he has climbed to 26th in the overall standings, with year-to-date earnings of just under $1.5 million. His lifetime tournament earnings now exceed $16.1 million, moving him ahead of Phil Ivey, who finished ninth in this same event.
Justin Bonomo came into the final table as the chip leader, but ultimately finished fourth for €266,000. This was his third cash in the past week at the EPT Grand Final, including a win in the €100,000 super high roller and a deep finish in the main event. Bonomo has cashed for a total of $2,519,373 in over the past few days.
