A total of 308 players showed up to compete in day 1A of the inaugural stop on the Card Player Poker Tour at the Choctaw Casino Resort in Durant, Oklahoma.
As a result of the huge turnout for the $1,000 main event, even a modest showing on day 1B will be enough to reach the $500,000 guarantee. Tournament officials, however, are anticipating an even bigger field, which will put the eventual first place prize somewhere in the neighborhood of $200,000.
The notables in attendence for the first of two re-entry starting days included Berry Johnston, Dennis Phillips, Adam Geyer, T.J. Cloutier, Jimmy Tran, Grant Hinkle, Richard Lee, Clint Tolbert and Card Player’s own Allyn Jaffrey and Barry Shulman.
There was also more than just the poker world represented in the tournament when NBA player and Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Eric Maynor took a seat directly to Barry Shulman’s left.
Maynor didn’t last long, but there’s been gossip suggesting that he will try again on Saturday to make a deep run at the title.
One of the more interesting moments of the day came up after a tournament director broke table 23, sending Jessica Wolfe to her new table. She picked up her seating assignment for table 9, seat 6, which just so happened to be the vacant seat on the immediate left of her husband Christopher Wolfe.
A floorman was called over to get a ruling on the unique situation, but he confirmed that because it was a random table draw, the Wolfes would have to stay. Fortunately, their table broke about an hour later, saving the two from battling it out against each other. As luck would have it, both husband and wife survived to day 2.
Other notables who survived the day included Johnston, Tran and 2012 WSOP bracelet winner Dung “Gomer” Nguyen.
