Holland’s new coalition government has pledged to update is antiquated and monopolistic online gambling regime.

The Labour (PvdA) and Liberal (VVD) parties issued their draft coalition agreement earlier this week saying, ““We will modernise gambling policy. Online gambling, sports betting and poker events will be strictly regulated. Thereby we will reduce the illegal offer of gambling. Compliance with the licensing conditions will be strictly monitored.

“Supplying gambling is not a core task of the government, therefore Holland Casino will be sold subject to conditions.”

Earlier this year the government moved to block online gambling companies targeting Dutch players and have had some success with companies such as Ladbrokes, Unibet and bwin moving out of the market.

The country has been mindful of its closed gambling market for some time and a government report recommended it be liberalised in 2010.
