Paddy Power, a Dublin-based online bookmaker, was so confident President Barack Obama would fend of GOP challenger Mitt Romney and be re-elected that by Monday it had already paid out more than $650,000 to its customers, the firm said on its blog.

The Journal reported that Paddy Power took out an advertisement in the Irish Times in order to promote what it said was a “gutsy call.”

The ad: “Sorry Romney, you’re not black or cool. We’re paying out early on an Obama victory.”

A spokesperson also wrote on the gambling firm’s website:

“Romney gave it a good shot and is doing well in the popular vote, but we suspect he’s had his moment in the sun and is likely to be remembered more for his legendary gaffes than presidential potential. The overall betting trend has shown one-way traffic for Obama and punters seemed to have called it 100-percent correct. Despite Romney appealing to the large evangelical and senior vote, America’s sticking with black and cool.”

The ad reportedly received some public backlash, which prompted the Irish advertising authority to look into the matter.

Paddy Power defended the ad. A spokesman told The Journal that it wasn’t “racial stereotyping.” The firm is known for pushing the boundaries on its ads.

The company added that what was printed is a “statement of fact.”

As of early Tuesday, popular New York Times blogger and statistician Nate Silver put Obama’s odds of winning the electoral college at 91 percent.
