Day 1A -- Card Player Poker Tour Wynn Championship Event Draws 86 Players

A total of 86 players put up the $5,000 buy-in for today’s day 1A action at the Card Player Poker Tour Wynn Championship Event, creating a prize pool of at least $417,000 with another registration day scheduled for Monday.

Tournament officials are expecting an even bigger turnout for day 1B, pushing the total prize pool over the $1 million mark.

Each player was given 30,000 in chips to start the day with 60-minute levels and a generous structure. Players were also given the option to re-enter the event after busting from the tournament. Players who re-entered during day 1A included Andrew Lichtenberger, David Sands, Sorel Mizzi and Ralph Thomas. Only Sands and Mizzi made it through the day.

Mars CallahanAfter 12 hours of play, only 29 remain. Among the notables who survived the day were Erick Lindgren, Steve Brecher, David Sands, Daniel Sindelar, Sam Stein, Ray Davis, Kevin Calenzo, Eric Hershler, WeiKai Chang and Sorel Mizzi.

Leading the field for most of the evening was Hyoung “Tom” Chae, but he was ultimately surpassed after giving a decent chunk of his stack to Tom Marchese, who finished the day in second place with 182,600. Marchese narrowly lost his lead late in the evening to Hollywood writer, producer and director Mars Callahan, who bagged up 198,700.

The day 1A players fortunate enough to make it through the end of the night will join the survivors from day 1B and combine for day 2 on Tuesday.
