The first ever Card Player Poker Tour Caribbean Cruise $1,100 no-limit hold’em main event is set to get underway on Tuesday, April 16th at 7:30 PM aboard the incredible MS Oasis of the Seas, the second largest cruise ship in history behind its sister ship, the Allure of the Seas. Hosted by Card Player Cruises during a 7-night cruise around the Caribbean, the event is sure to be one to remember.
Main event players will each receive 30,000 in starting chips, with the first 12 levels lasting 40 minutes, the next 12 levels 50 minutes and all the remaining levels being an hour long.
Tuesday will see 6 levels before play is paused for the night, only to resume on Wednesday, Apr. 17th at 11:30 AM, with the late registration and re-entry period ending at the start of play.
While the main event is just now ready to get underway, the cruise embarked from Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale, FL on Apr. 13th and spent its first two nights at sea before pulling into Labadee, Haiti on Apr. 15th. The day trip to the private peninsula owned by Royal Caribbean International featured many great activities including a Haitian flea market, private beaches, water sports, a small roller coaster and the “Dragon’s Flight” zip-line, the longest in the world traveling over water. Check out CardPlayerTV’s video recap of the first leg of the trip below:
Before play begins in the main event, passengers will be able to visit the second port of call in Falmouth, Jamaica. The third and final destination on the cruise is Cozumel, Mexico on Thursday, while those who remain in the main event play down to the final table.
Preliminary Events
In the early days of the cruise there is also plenty of great poker action going on in the full service poker room operated by Card Player Cruises. The early days saw two $250 satellites for the main event being held, which awarded a total of nine seats into the big show.
Monday, Apr. 15th featured a unique event, an $80 buy-in no-limit hold’em survivor tournament, in which the top 20 percent of the field chops the money of the 80 percent who busted.
A total 55 entries were counted, meaning that the final 11 survivors each cashed for $300. The 11 winners were Howard Kimmel, Barry Quinn, Cruz Baca, Wendell Bias, Lamar Sanders, John Mihlak, Larry Prugh, Sandy Kimmel, Larry Miles, Jim Steinle and Thierry “The Sheriff” De Quick.
54-year-old De Quick traveled all the way from Flanders, Belgium to attend this tournament. He saw an advertisement for the event, and saw that the dates aligned with a preplanned trip to Florida. He had been thinking about playing in the World Poker Tour Seminole Hard Rock Showdown, but knew that this event would appeal to his girlfriend, with all of the amenities and activities available on the cruise.
In addition to tournament action, the poker room has also been spreading plenty of cash games, with common options ranging from $2-$4 limit hold’em to $20-$40 Omaha eight-or-better, with plenty of $1-$3 and $2-$5 no-limit action as well.
