Construction recently began on what will be a brand new $440 million casino-resort in Baltimore, and so far so good on the massive development, according to CBS.

The Caesars Entertainment Corp. property is part of the gambling expansion that has been taking place statewide in Maryland.

“I think people can see the reality. With all the talk that’s going on and the renderings that have gone out, you can see the real look of the casino starting to develop,” the company told CBS.

Thanks to 122,000 square feet of gaming floor space, the casino will have 100 table games, 2,500 slots and a 25-table poker room. It is expected to open in late 2014.

Card Player recently spoke with Stephen Martino, director of the State Lottery and Gaming Control Agency, about what’s in store for the state next year.

“In 2014 you are going to see a maturity of our casinos and we can start getting into year-over-year numbers on the table [games],” Martino said. “The other big thing would obviously be the opening of Horseshoe Casino in Baltimore City. That will rearrange the gambling landscape here a bit and we will get five of the six licenses up. 2014 will be an active year for us.”

As part of the 2012 referendum, the state’s casinos were allowed to have human-dealt table games.

Casino giants MGM Resorts and Penn National Gaming are competing for approval to build in Prince George’s County. A decision by the state is expected in the near future.
