Industry To Be Discussed On Capitol Hill

On Tuesday, online poker will receive a long overdue — though probably completely irrelevant and useless — hearing on Capitol Hill. It is widely considered that the efforts to make a federal online poker bill into law are drawing stone cold dead.

Who knows if it ever had a chance, but the window is closed these days.

The meeting was announced earlier this month, and now a list of witnesses has been released. The witnesses are the people who will speak in front of Congressmen.

They are: John Pappas, Executive Director, Poker Players Alliance; Andrew Abboud, Vice President of Government Relations and Community Development, Las Vegas Sands Corporation; Geoff Freeman, President and Chief Executive Officer, American Gaming Association; Les Bernal, National Director, Stop Predatory Gambling; Kurt Eggert, Professor of Law, Dale E. Fowler School of Law, Chapman University; Rachel Volberg, Ph.D., Associate Professor, School of Public Health and Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts Amherst.

It is worth noting that Sands owner Sheldon Adelson is vehemently opposed to online gambling, saying he will spend whatever it takes to combat its spread within the United States.

Some think his efforts will mirror his success at putting a Republican in the White House.

Adelson wants Congress to not only not pass a bill authorizing online poker, but he wants federal lawmakers to push through legislation that would ban it outright. To reiterate: That has an astronomically low chance of happening, however. So, don’t worry.

With all things considered, Tuesday’s hearing entitled “The State of Online Gaming” will probably feature some interesting rhetoric and cool numbers, but those are likely its limitations.
