MGM has received a preliminary finding of suitability by Massachusetts gaming regulators.

The decision, which game after a hearing this week, puts the firm one step closer to building a massive casino complex in the western part of the state.

Massachusetts legalized such casinos in 2011 and it has been a slow process of finding out which companies should get licensed.

The MGM review took around 10 months to complete, according to The Boston Globe.

The firm received the OK from voters in Springfield earlier this year.

According to The Globe, “the recommendation came with several conditions, including that MGM explain its business practices in Macau, China, and its association with a former board member convicted of illegal wiretapping and conspiracy.”

MGM is the only firm left in competition for a casino in the western region of the state. All of its competitors have exited the race. MGM’s plan calls for a $800 million development.

Over in the Boston area, Wynn Resorts looks like the favorite to build a casino in the town of Everett. Wynn will soon have a hearing similar to the one MGM had this week.

The third casino license in the state will likely go to a tribal group.
