The Card Player Poker Tour Foxwoods stop is winding down and the most anticipated event of the series is just on the horizon. The $1,650 no-limit hold’em $300,000 guarantee main event will begin at 11 a.m. EST on Friday, February 14 and is expected to draw the largest CPPT main event field of the season thus far.
The third stop of Season II kicked off February 8 with a $600 no-limit hold’em $100,000 guarantee and drew a field of 502 players, more than doubling the guarantee and amassing a prize pool of $258,078.
Christopher Leong picked up the first trophy of the series when he and second place finisher Chris Schonbach made an even chop for $42,149 in prize money each. The chop had big implications for the CPPT leaderboard as well, placing Leong and Schonbach in a two-way tie for the fourth and fifth spots for most money earned on the season and knocking Palm Beach Kennel Club main event runner-up Luke Brereton down to the sixth spot by a mere $7.
A second cash for Leong, 52nd for $602 in Event 4: $300 no-limit hold’em $75,000 guarantee, secured his spot in the fourth place slot with a total of $42,751 on the season.
The second tournament more than tripled the guarantee, pulling in a prize pool of nearly $70,000. Je Wook Oh bested the field of 332 players and took home the top prize of $14,000. Event number 3 more than doubled its $10,000 guarantee and the prize pools continued to surpass the projected numbers through Event 7.
Andy Gallen won his first major career live tournament in Event 4 after nearly skipping it to stay at the cash games tables. Gallen said he was seated with $305 at the table in front of him and friends from his home card room in Keene, New Hampshire encouraged him to register for the tournament along with them. Gallen turned his $300 entry into $18,347 and a CPPT trophy after two days of play.
Event 7: $400 no-limit hold’em $75,000 guarantee amassed a prize pool of $130,707 and the winner, who will take home $28,324 in prize money, will be determined late Thursday night.
In total, the first seven events of the series surpassed the promised guarantees by more than $355,000.
Event 8: $300 no-limit hold’em $20,000 guarantee was scheduled to begin Thursday at 12 p.m. EST however Foxwoods staff make the decision to cancel the tournament due to the blizzard-like weather conditions throughout the Northeast.
This is the CPPT’s first stop at the Connecticut resort, ensuring a first-time Foxwoods champion in the tour’s history. The winner will join Harvey Vandeven and John McNulty as Season II champions.
