A former U.S. nuke chief who was accused last fall of using phony poker chips at an Iowa casino has been fined, the Navy said in a press release Monday.

The fine was a forfeiture of $4,000 in pay.

The state of Iowa declined to press charges against Timothy Giardina, despite the alleged crime being considered a felony in the state. He was accused of using at least $1,500 worth of counterfiet chips.

The federal government decided to give him a “non-judicial punishment” after its investigation determined he violated the “Uniform Code of Military Justice.”

The Navy said that his conduct was “unbecoming [of] an officer and gentleman.”

“The first count involved Giardina lying to an investigator. The second related to circumstances surrounding Giardina’s failure to turn in and subsequent use of gambling chips he claims to have found at a casino,” the Navy said in the statement.

Giardina also received “a punitive letter of reprimand.”

In October, Giardina was demoted and currently works at the office of the Navy Staff.
