A coalition of the nation’s governors has come out in opposition to Sheldon Adelson’s efforts to see online gambling banned nationwide.
In a letter from their Economic Development Committee, the National Governors Association (NGA) raised strong concerns against Adelson’s “ill-advised legislation.”
In a letter to Congress, the NGA wrote “the nation’s governors are concerned with legislation introduced in Congress that would ban Internet gaming and Internet lottery sales because it challenges the federal-state relationship”.
The letter went on to say that this issue has traditionally been addressed by the states, and that any federal regulatory effort that would affect states regulator authority should not be made unilaterally without input from the states.
Adelson has promised to spend “whatever it takes” to make online gambling illegal in the United States. His lobbying group—the Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling—is also working at the state level to prevent other states from authorizing it.
Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware are the three states with online gambling.
