Ask any group of poker players how you played your hand and they’ll come up with dozens of different opinions. That’s just the nature of the game.

Each week, Card Player will select a hand from the high-stakes, big buy-in poker world, break it down and show that there’s more than one way to get the job done.

The Scenario

There are 41 players remaining in a massive 1,496-player field tournament. You are already guaranteed at least a €20,300 payday. With the blinds at 10,000-20,000 with a 3,000 ante and a stack of 899,000, you are currently working with about 45 big blinds, enough to put you in the middle of the pack. The tournament is being played eight-handed, meaning there will be a pay jump to €24,400 at 39 players

Villain no. 1, an accomplished young pro with 1,978,000 in chips, raises to 40,000 in early position. You look down at 7Spade Suit7Heart Suit and call. Another young player behind you, villain no. 2, makes the call in late position.

The flop comes down JDiamond Suit9Heart Suit9Spade Suit and villain no. 1 checks. Sensing an opportunity to take the down the pot on a paired, rainbow flop, you bet 60,000. Villain no. 2 calls, as does villain no. 1.

The turn is the 7Diamond Suit, giving you a full house. Villain no. 1 checks and you fire in 120,000. Villain no. 2 calls and villain no. 1 suddenly check-raises to 375,000. You call and so does villain no. 2.

The river is the 3Diamond Suit and villain no. 1 checks. You have 421,000 remaining in your stack and the pot size is 1,476,000.

The Questions

Do you check or bet? If checking, do you plan on calling off your stack should villain no. 2 bet? What if villain no. 1 calls or raises? Are you checking to induce a bet from villain no. 2? What possible hand could he be holding that would bet the river? Should you shove? Would you get called by worse? What kind of hand could villain no. 1 be holding after raising preflop, check-raising the turn and checking the river?

What Actually Happened

At the 2014 EPT Barcelona main event, Dominik Panka checked on a board reading JDiamond Suit9Heart Suit9Spade Suit7Diamond Suit3Diamond Suit.

Mikhail Rudoy then opted to check as well, holding 7Spade Suit7Heart Suit. Ji Zhang then checked behind and Rudoy took down the pot with his full house.

Panka went on to finish in 11th place. Rudoy followed him to the rail in 10th. Both players earned €77,600 for their run. Zhang went on to make the final table.
