India, a country with more than 1.25 billion people, is currently taking a look at the legality of online poker for real money.
According to financialexpress.com, on Wednesday, the Indian Supreme Court continued to hear arguments about whether the games should be authorized or not.
If they are, it could be a huge win for gaming companies, as India is regarded as a huge market. The report said that it could be worth billions annually. For comparison, the U.S. online gaming industry could reach $5.2 billion by 2020.
The crucial question before the apex court is whether these games involve an element of skill and can hence be played for stakes or not. The court is also expected to bring clarity over the ways companies offering these gaming services can make profits as profiteering from transactions or from a winner’s booty is not considered legal. Noted lawyer and Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi argued on behalf of the online gaming companies on Tuesday.
Poker is widely regarded elsewhere as a game that requires an abundance of skill to play well, and in the long-run for players, poker is without a doubt a skill game.
Currently, people can bet on offline lotteries and horse racing, the report said.
“Industry experts say Indians love to gamble,” the report said.
