Ken TiptonAfter 14 levels of play, Ken Tipton emerged as the day 1a chip leader of the Card Player Poker Tour Bicycle Casino main event.

133 players made their way to Los Angeles and put up the $1,100 with hopes of earning a CPPT title and the first place prize money that comes with it. At the end of the day, that original field was slimmed down to just 29.

While Tipton is the chip leader with 319,300, he is joined by World Poker Tour champion Josh Hale, Anthony Nguyen and Amir Dehghan at the top of the chip counts. They bagged 261,000, 228,000 and 219,200, respectively. Other notables who waded their way through day 1a include Andrew Miramontes and Tom Braband. Braband was more well-known for his online prowess under the screen name “TitanTom32,” where he played online multi-table tournaments.

While 29 did survive the day, it wouldn’t be impossible for them to make an appearance on day 1b. Anybody that has already qualified for day 2, can play a subsequent Day 1 and not forfeit their stack. They will just take the bigger stack forward and the smaller stack will be taken out of play.

There was plenty of firepower who showed up for day 1a though and lots of top notch professional players were eliminated before the day’s end. Former World Poker Tour Player of the Year Matt Salsberg, Card Player’s own Barry Shulman, Melanie Weisner, Tyler Kenney, Dana Kellstrom, Chris DeMaci and former WPT Champion Eric Hershler were all eliminated before the final hand of the day was dealt.

Allyn ShulmanAllyn Shulman joined her husband Barry on the rail as she was eliminated late in the day. She was the only former CPPT champion in the field on Saturday. Shulman won her first CPPT title in 2013 after taking down the $5,000 no limit hold’em Venetian main event for over $293,000.

For most of the day, Ed Klein held an overwhelming chip lead over the rest of the field, but after having his pocket tens run into a set of fours on a nine-high flop, he lost a pot worth just shy of 350,000 to give Muir the chip lead. Klein was left with just over 20 big blinds and was eliminated late in the day.

The 27 survivors of day 1a will return to the Bicycle Casino for day 2 at 1 pm on Tuesday. They will play with the survivors of day 1b and day 1c which get cards in the air at noon on Sunday and Monday. Card Player will have complete coverage of the event from day 1b through the completion of a final table.
