The inaugural Card Player Poker Tour stop at Hollywood Park Casino took off in grand fashion in the form of the Westside Poker Championship Oct. 23, marking the casino’s first major tournament series in nearly two years.

Numbers were even better than expected when digits were tallied at the end of day 1a registration with 102 players showing up for their chance at CPPT glory and a piece of the $100,000 guaranteed prize pool.

“For a weekday – Thursday – getting over 100 players, we are more than on track to hit our numbers for sure,” said tournament director Corey Silver. “We are looking at increasing those numbers for Friday and Saturday.”

Players who made an appearance on the first day included World Series of Poker bracelet winner Walter Smiley, who won the $5,000 seven-card stud event at the seventh annual WSOP in 1979, CPPT Bicycle Casino main event bubbler Derrick Modeki, father and son duo John and Thomas Young, Michael Dollins, Brian Gorman and Facebook qualifier Jobe Leon, who won his seat through a promotion using the popular social media site.

Massoud "Mike" EskandariMassoud “Mike” Eskandari finished day 1a with the chip lead with 564,000, followed by Cliff Schumacher and Aaron Kweskin with 515,000 and 362,000 respectively.

“Players are loving it, the regular players are really excited about the deep stacks and playing as part of a major tournament series,” Silver said. “It’s been great.”

Players across the three day 1s have until the start of level 9, roughly 4:15 pm each day to register for the tournament and re-entry is allowed an unlimited number of times during the registration periods. However, players can only qualify for day 2 one time and no best stack forward option will be offered.

All players who make day 2 will be in the money and once a final table is reached, a live stream will be featured on CardPlayer.com until a winner is crowned.

Return to CardPlayer.com each day for live updates on all the action straight from the tournament floor. Day 1b will begin at 12 pm.
