A professional poker player from Australia was the victor of a massive six-figure sum after a court decided that he should be awarded damages because his friends said on Facebook that he stole $2,000 from them during a Las Vegas trip and also tried to steal during a poker game at a casino in Sydney.

Altogether, Nicholas Polias is due $340,000 in damages after suing four of his former friends for defamation, The Sydney Morning Herald reported Friday. The ruling came several weeks prior.

Polias has total live tournament earnings of nearly $83,000.

One of the friends admitted to giving false testimony during the trial.

It turned out the $2,000 that was once allegedly stolen from the hotel room was in fact still in the hotel room. The defendants reportedly couldn’t prove any of their allegations against Polias.

More from the report:

Although the number of people who read the Facebook comments or heard the allegations at dinner was confined, the hurt and distress caused was magnified because it was to almost all of Mr Polias’ social contacts within the poker playing community, Justice Rothman said. Justice Rothman also granted an injunction preventing the four defendants from continuing to publish the defamatory imputations and repeating them orally. He said aggravated damages were appropriate because the four had failed to apologise, failed to remove the Facebook posts and gave false evidence during the hearing.

Polias reportedly was delighted with the ruling.
