The $10,000 buy-in World Poker Tour Five Diamond World Poker Classic main event at Bellagio in Las Vegas drew an incredibly large field, by today’s standards, of 582 entries. The field created a total prize pool of $5,684,200, $1,477,890 of which will go to the eventual winner later this week.
This is the largest turn out for the Five Diamond World Poker Classic since season VI in 2007, when the then $15,000 buy-in event drew 626 players. It also marks the largest prize pool since season VII and the biggest first-place prize so far this season on the WPT.
The numbers were undoubtedly helped by the unlimited re-entry format, which allowed players to spend an additional $10,000 to get back into the tournament if they busted before the start of level 9. Daniel Negreanu admitted to being in the tournament for five bullets before he was finally able to amass a comfortable stack.
Late blitz of gambling before rebuy period ended. Spent $50k total and am sitting on a 130k stack well over twice the avg #WPTBellagio

The tournament proved to be so popular, in fact, that the Bellagio had to shut down cash game tables for a short period of time and take alternates in order to accommodate everyone.
The Five Diamond World Poker Classic main event will wrap up on Dec. 20. On Dec. 18, the Bellagio will also host a three-day $100,000 buy-in Alpha8 tournament.
