At the request of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York gaming officials are going to solicit bids from casino groups that are interested in building a Las Vegas-style facility in the state’s “Southern Tier,” a western region bordering Pennsylvania, The New York Times reported.

New York casino regulators still might not award a fourth license, but they will take a look at proposals and make a decision at a yet-to-be-determined time. It will take months.

Last month, regulators picked three winners for casinos elsewhere in the state. The concern about a fourth was that it might over-saturate the gaming market in the Empire State.

None of the casinos will be in or around New York City.

Cuomo has called the Southern Tier “economically ailing.” All the casinos that will soon be coming to New York are designed to help struggling upstate areas.

The state currently has three poker rooms and one more could be on its way thanks to the additional casinos. New York already has tribal casinos.
