Canadian poker player Harnam Matharn, 21, was arrested at the final table of the Fallsview Poker Classic at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, Ontario last week for allegedly robbing a fellow poker player in Kahnawake, Quebec in November.
Police were tipped off to his whereabouts by players at the Fallsview Poker Classic.
Matharn was the chip leader when he was taken away, and he ended up being blinded out of the tournament in third for an $80,000 score. Two players busted after he was arrested.
The event featured a $1,100 buy-in and drew around 600 players.
Matharn’s arrest reportedly occured without incident, as he was quietly taken away in handcuffs.
“This wasn’t overdue parking tickets; this was a Canada-wide warrant on very serious charges with a police service willing to travel from another province to return him,” Casino Enforcement Unit member Detective Sergeant Rick Davidson said.
“The player’s position or stake in the poker game, as unfortunate as that may or may not have been, becomes nearly irrelevant when I apply the public-safety test. And that is my primary concern,” Davidson said about the timing of the arrest.
