MGM Resorts International broke ground Tuesday morning for its $800 million casino in downtown Springfield. MGM was one of three firms to get the OK to build a new gaming facility in Massachusetts.

According to the Associated Press, the Las Vegas-style casino is the largest economic development project the region has seen in generations. Thousands of permanent jobs will be created.

The Springfield property will have 3,000 slot machines, 75 table games and 250 hotel rooms. MGM plans to open the casino in about 30 months.

The company still needs approval to tear down a historic building to make room for a parking garage, but the OK is expected, according to the AP.

Construction for a slots parlor in Plainville from Penn National Gaming is already underway. Wynn is still making arrangements to begin construction on its planned casino in Everett, close to Boston. MGM is also in the midst of building a casino in Maryland but near Washington D.C., and that one could open sometime in 2016.
