Friday NBA Preview

If you’ve been playing NBA Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) lately, you’ve probably noticed an increase in overall scoring and in turn an increase in the amount of points your lineup needs to score to cash in the contests you’re playing. It’s hard to say for sure what to attribute this to, but I would lean toward so many injuries resulting in really strong value plays as the most likely reason. In addition, players like Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis and Demarcus Cousins seem to be dropping 60 plus fantasy points on a routine basis.

With that in mind, I’m not changing my strategy a ton, but I am aware of this recent phenomenon and am aiming to load my lineups with players I think have upside. Using a player that is very likely to score 15-20 fantasy points right now could be a death knell for your lineup. Let’s take a look at Friday’s games.

Detroit Pistons @ Orlando Magic

Reggie Jackson, Andre Drummond and especially Kentavious Caldwell-Pope have all seen huge boosts in value since Greg Monroe injured his knee. Monroe could be back for this one and if so all of the Pistons will be tough to use. If he does miss the game though, the three I mentioned will make for strong plays. For Orlando, their recent good play has led to most of the players on the roster seeing a price increase in DFS and they are now tough to use in all but the best matchups.

Los Angeles Clippers @ Philadelphia 76ers

Blake Griffin is back and the days of me using four Clippers seemingly every night are over. That’s how it seems to go in DFS when important players get injured. They leave so much slack to be picked up that their teammates can be good value for weeks. I probably won’t be using Clippers in cash games in anything but great matchups at home, with Blake Griffin being the main target. For Philadelphia, Nerlens Noel is playing great but rostering any Philly player leaves a pit in my stomach every time.

Charlotte Hornets @ Washington Wizards

There really isn’t much to say here. Aside from the possibility of injury news, this is one of the worst games to target on this slate.

Miami Heat @ Atlanta Hawks

As I wrote about recently, the Goran Dragic arrival has really transformed the Heat from one of the slowest and least fantasy friendly teams in the league to a really fun squad. Dragic and Dwyane Wade have both been very good DFS plays recently and will continue to be on the radar as they fight for a playoff spot. Atlanta is what they have been all year, a great team that shares the ball and doesn’t lean heavily on players to play big minutes. This is also known as an unreliable team to use in DFS.

Cleveland Cavaliers @ Brooklyn Nets

Brook Lopez has slapped together a few really good games recently and Lebron James is still the best player on the planet. Aside from those two, everyone in this game makes me pretty nervous. Even Lopez and Lebron have a very real chance of disappointing in this slow matchup due to their inflated prices. I’ll be mostly avoiding this one.

Boston Celtics @ New York Knicks

The Knicks are the biggest disaster in the league right now, but at least they have a giant wave of injuries that is making them DFS relevant. Shane Larkin and Langston Galloway have both recently been in situations where they were near locks to play 36 minutes or more. All players at their prices playing those kinds of minutes are in play. Isaiah Thomas’s return for the Celtics makes all of the Celtics slightly worse as he takes a ton of shots.

Los Angeles Lakers @ Toronto Raptors

Kyle Lowry is injured and the Raptors are really struggling of late. They have a chance to get right in a home matchup with the Lakers though. Look at Greivis Vasquez, Lou Williams and Demar Derozan as possible targets in this one.

Sacramento Kings @ New Orleans Pelicans

This one pits two of the best players in the league for DFS purposes against each other in Anthony Davis and Demarcus Cousins. The Kings have been playing at a breakneck pace recently and that leaves Anthony Davis with a chance for a gigantic game here. He’ll definitely be someone I’m looking to find a way to fit on Friday.

Minnesota Timberwolves @ Houston Rockets

A pretty epic injury (tanking?) bug has hit the Timberwolves and they’re consistently playing games with only eight guys. Heck, they played an overtime game against Utah with only seven guys earlier this week. For that reason, they’ve become DFS relevant even though it feels totally dirty every time. Monitor their injury situation for this one. For the Rockets, it’s a cake home matchup with a team that also plays fairly fast. James Harden and Trevor Ariza are on my radar.

Golden State Warriors @ Memphis Grizzlies

This game will be much more fun for real life purposes than DFS purposes. Both of these teams sport excellent defenses and no players in the game have really good matchups to be exploited.

Dallas Mavericks @ San Antonio Spurs

Kawhi Leonard is a one man wrecking crew right now. He’s likely to be the one player in this game I’m targeting, as everyone else on both teams is fairly inconsistent.

Utah Jazz @ Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets allow a lot of fantasy points to opposing big men. Rudy Gobert and Derrick Favors of the Jazz are big men who score a lot of fantasy points. Are you getting my drift? Also, look for Trey Burke to continue his little hot streak if Gordon Hayward and Rodney Hood sit out again. The Nuggets are a bit of a mess and the Jazz have the best defense in the league since the all-star break.

Portland Trail Blazers @ Phoenix Suns

The Blazers draw a good spot here against the up-tempo Suns. They’re in the midst of some injuries so you’ll want to monitor the situation before deciding who to use but there should be some Blazers in play here. For the Suns? Well, you’ve come to the wrong place. I’ve pretty much given up on the Suns entirely since every time I use even one of their players it seems to backfire. They’re a deep team with different guys who can pick up the slack every night. And they drive me nuts.

Our friends over at FantasyDraft are still running their NBA Beta and have games opening and filling throughout the day. The NBA all-star break gave me an opportunity to get a little excited about baseball season being right around the corner, and I can’t wait to see what FantasyDraft’s MLB product is going to look like.
