The Chicago Cubs, who haven’t won a World Series title since 1908, reportedly are popular this year at Nevada sports books, like they are every year. However, this year could yield even more bets on the Cubs because the 1989 film “Back to the Future Part II” had the team winning the World Series in 2015.

ESPN’s Chicago Cubs beat reporter Jesse Rogers penned an article in which he talked to the writers of the cult classic, who said they are aware of the situation and find it fun to think about. Even a player on the Cubs gives the movie significance for the team’s 2015 efforts.

“I know in ‘Back to the Future’ we win it in 2015, which is kind of crazy, to say the least,” Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta said. “We’ll do our best to make sure that happens.”

Thanks to a solid off-season, the Cubs are 6/1 to win it all at MGM, ESPN reported.

As for the team the Cubs beat in the movie, it was Miami. That would be impossible because Miami is in the National League as well. It is worth noting that the movie did predict that there would be a baseball team in Miami. The team didn’t exist until 1993.

In 2014, gamblers in Nevada bet $3.9 billion on sports, an increase of 7.7 percent over 2013. A record $227 million was won by the sports books on those wagers.

Since sports betting is at all-time highs, some are calling for it in other states. Even the commissioners of the NBA and MLB indicated they would consider a federal sports betting bill.
