Poker players and online poker advocates can listen to today’s online poker hearing in Sacramento, which starts at 1:30 p.m. PST. It’s the first of four California online poker hearings planned between now and mid-July.

Seven pieces of legislation pertaining to various issues will be discussed at the public hearing, so in a sense it’s not a true online poker hearing. But any formal, public discussion on online poker in California is a great sign. For years lawmakers there have been trying to sort out the complexities of how to regulate online cards for real money. No Golden State lawmaker has ever cast a vote on an online poker bill.

Unfortunately, the California legislature isn’t expected to OK a regulated intrastate online poker industry this year or next year, but today’s hearing, as well as the upcoming ones, should help the chances in years to come. Some tribal gaming groups, card rooms and race tracks are divided on how the industry should be legalized and regulated.

California is looking to join Nevada, Delaware and New Jersey with regulated online poker. Pennsylvania is also very seriously considering the industry.

The bill to be discussed today is AB 431.
