Friday Matchups
Every week we dive into the most beneficial matchups for pitchers and for hitters in this space. Well, this week is no different, so let’s get to it.
Pitchers to Use
Max Scherzer vs Phillies – Scherzer has been absolutely dominant of late, posting 16 or more FanDuel points in his last four starts. This is a very straightforward chalk pick, as the Nationals are astronomical favorites according to the odds makers. But when it comes to selecting pitchers for daily fantasy cash games, the straightforward pick is typically the correct one and this is no different.
Zack Greinke vs Padres – Honestly, I’m not a huge Greinke fan. He can be very aggravating to use in daily fantasy as he has a habit of nibbling the corners and racking up big pitch counts while not being a super elite strikeout pitcher. That said, his overall body of work is rock solid and this is a great matchup at home against a Padres club that doesn’t have much pop from the left side. Greinke is a great option on two pitcher sites and is also a good tournament option that can help you squeeze some extra hitting into your lineup via his reduced price tag compared to Scherzer.
Michael Pineda vs Rangers – Two starts ago, Pineda absolutely dazzled by striking out 16 Orioles in 7 innings of work. Then he went to the place where daily fantasy pitching value goes to die, Kansas City. Well now he’s back home facing a weak Texas offense. If he can get anywhere near the form he flashed against Baltimore, you’d be happy having Pineda on Friday.
Noah Syndergaard and Gerrit Cole, Mets vs Pirates – These two young guns will square off in what will be a very fun game to watch for fans of good young pitching. Cole is a little further along than his counterpart Syndergaard, but from what I’ve seen so far this year, both guys have tremendous upside for fantasy purposes every time they take the mound. If nothing else, these are the two most exciting pitchers to use on this slate in my opinion.
Pitchers to Target
Ryan Vogelsong and Kyle Kendrick, Giants vs Rockies – This is pretty much as much as you could ever ask for when looking for a good hitting environment. We’ve got two subpar starting pitchers squaring off in Coors Field. Odds makers have projected this game to have slightly more than 10 runs scored and nobody will be shocked if that number is bested. My strategy for Friday, provided there is no weather issue with this game, will be to pair Scherzer with as many hitters from this game as I can fit. It’s always risky loading up on one team or game, but this is a situation where I’ll likely be taking that risk.
Josh Collmenter vs Cubs – In his last home start, Collmenter posted -7.67 FanDuel points. Frankly, I think it’s the worst score I’ve ever seen for a pitcher on FanDuel. He went 1 1/3 innings and gave up 9 earned runs on 8 hits, while surrendering two home runs. Now it’s impossible to predict anything close to that kind of outburst, but with the Cubs young and very explosive lineup coming to town, I’m looking at this game for offensive fireworks.
Colby Lewis @ Yankees – Lewis is a below average pitcher who struggles against left-handed hitting. The Yankees are a quality lineup that boasts a number of good left-handed hitters. Yankee Stadium, with its short right field porch, is one of the friendliest parks in the league for left-handed hitters. Are you catching my drift here?
