On Monday in the Rio Convention Center, several professional poker players were in serious contention to eventually match, or surpass, the record for most cashes in a single summer at the World Series of Poker.
Mike Leah and Mark Radoja each had nine, while Eric Baldwin had eight. All three bracelet winners have a chance at the record of 11 set by Konstantin Puchkov in 2012. Event no. 59, a $1,500 no-limit hold’em, began on Monday, leaving nine events on the schedule. In 2012, Puchkov set the record in 61 total bracelet events, seven fewer than on the 2015 schedule. The WSOP has grown in this way every year since 2010.
Leah is averaging $16,698 per cash, while Radoja and Baldwin are averaging $9,345 and $9,262, respectively. Leah has two final tables, while the other poker pros do not.
Currently, eight other players have seven cashes apiece. That lists includes Max Pescatori, Antonio Esfandiari, Stephen Chidwick, Shannon Shorr, Mike Watson, Taylor Paur and Jeremy Ausmus.
“Breaking the record would definitely be cool, and it’s on my mind now,” Leah told Card Player Monday. “It’s good for extra motivation in small tournaments like [Monday’s] $1,500.”
When asked if he’ll be going all out for the record, Leah said: “I’ve been playing almost everything anyway, only multi-tabling when it makes sense. I don’t think [my plans] will change very much. I’m definitely tired at this stage of the summer, but no more than other years. I have cut down on side action, the cash games and so on, so I’m feeling fresh enough for the home stretch.”
Last year, Humberto Brenes had 10 cashes going into the main event, but failed to make the money in the $10,000 no-limit hold’em championship.
