Report: Russia Might Fund National Chess Federation Through Online PokerCountry Considering Regulating Sites |

Russian lawmakers are considering regulating online poker and some are eyeing the revenue for the Russian Chess Federation, according to a report from SportingNews.com.
“Sources have indicated an amount in the region of 12M Swiss Francs could be distributed to Russia’s Chess Federation through money collected from legislated online poker,” the report said. Legislation reportedly has been proposed.
It has been estimated that online poker could bring in 5 billion rubles ($146 million) per year to the government. Poker was officially considered a sport in Russia in 2007, protecting its standing. However, the Sports Ministry removed it from the national sports registry in June 2009, re-labeling it as a type of gambling
Russia has blacklisted some of the largest online poker operators in the world, though some Russians do continue to play online poker on offshore sites.
