Wynn Wins Environmental Permit In Massachusetts

Project Still Faces Challenges From Boston

A proposed casino in Everett, Massachusetts from billionaire casino developer Steve Wynn received an environmental permit from the state on Friday, according to The Boston Globe.

The permit came after two years of looking at the project. Wynn had already received a gaming license from the state, but the firm is being sued by the city of Boston, which is seeking to get Wynn’s license invalidated because it claims the state played favorites in picking Wynn’s proposal.

A hearing in that case is set for Sept. 22.

Wynn and Boston’s mayor have been trading public barbs over the issue.

Concerns about traffic issues that could be caused by the $1.7 billion casino have evidently been mitigated by the environmental permit, which also calls for Wynn to work with state Department of Transportation on potential long-term traffic problems.

The property Wynn wants to build on is a former Monsanto Chemical site. Part of the clean-up plan is to use 250,000 live oysters in a partnership with the nonprofit Massachusetts Oyster Project.

Thanks to Friday’s permit, Wynn Everett looks like it might be able to open by 2018, assuming the lawsuit filed by Boston, which wanted a different casino developer to win the license, is dismissed.
