OsloAn offshoot of Amaya Gaming Group will be hosting Norway’s first legal live poker tournament this fall, roughly a year after the country finally relaxed its anti-poker laws.

According to a press release, Amaya’s Global Poker Tours will run the the 2015 Norwegian Championships, which includes five regional events before a main event in Oslo.

The first regional tournament kicks off on Oct. 10, with the Oslo championship event running Nov. 18-24. In the past, the “unofficial” Norwegian Championships were held in other countries, including Ireland, England and Latvia.

“[E]xpectations are high for the first event on home soil,” the company said in a press release.

“More than 100 players registered for the event on the first day of pre-registrations, showing strong local interest and appetite.”

At least 2,000 players are expected for the Oslo championship. Only Norwegians can play.

Norwegian poker pro Johnny Lodden said in a statement: “It’s been a long time coming, and I’m incredibly excited to finally play a major poker tournament on home soil. No matter what sport you play, there’s always something extra special about competing at home, and this is no exception.”

Five percent of all buy-ins will be donated to a Norwegian charity that deals with leukemia.
