Since casino gaming was legalized in 2012 Maryland’s casino industry has grown at double-digit rate. Maryland Live! Casino in Hanover, MD accounted for 76 percent of the state’s total casino business in 2014. In addition to slots and table games the Casino also plays host to a thriving 24/7 poker room with 52 tables. The burgeoning poker hotspot is taking a huge step this week as it plays host to the first-ever World Poker Tour WPT Maryland Live! Casino tournament series, which runs from Sept. 23 – 29.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the WPT to bring one of the biggest poker tours in the country to the State of Maryland for the very first time,” said Mike Smith, Director of Poker Operations at Maryland Live! Casino. “The sheer size of our Poker Room, with 52 tables, makes Maryland Live! the perfect location to host high-profile tournaments and events, such as the WPT. We expect to attract poker enthusiasts from across the county to participate.”

The centerpiece of the six-event schedule is the WPT $3,500 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event which kicks off with the first of two starting days beginning at noon on Friday, Sept. 25.

Players will start with 30,000 in chips in this event, which will allow a single re-entry per player per day. Registration will remain open through the start of level 7 each day, with hour-long levels throughout the tournament.

Notables expected to play the event include hometown hero Christian Harder, 2012 WSOP main event champion Greg Merson, current 2015 Card Player Player of the Year race leader Anthony Zinno and two-time WPT champion Darren Elias.
