The very same gambler who won $2.5 million betting on the Kansas City Royals to win the World Series reportedly raked in $240,000 betting against former UFC champion Ronda Rousey this past weekend.
According to Maxim Magazine, Dave Oancea, better known as “Vegas Dave,” put $20,000 on Holly Holm to beat the one-time undefeated women’s champion. The bet paid out huge after Holly knocked out Rousey not long into the second round. Rousey was recently told that she can’t fight again for up to six months due to the damage she took in her only UFC loss to date.
Oancea’s win was part of an overall bad day for sports books in Las Vegas. There isn’t an official figure on how they did on the UFC fight, but it wasn’t good, according to various media reports early this week. Sports books typically need the big favorite to pull through.
Despite the tough weekend, Nevada sports books are poised to have another record-breaking year.
Nevada sports books saw $3.9 billion in wagers in all of 2014, winning $227 million. Both totals were all-time highs for the Silver State. Through the end of August, Nevada sports books saw the amount wagered increase by 14.6 percent compared to the same period last year.
As for Vegas Dave, the gambler told the Las Vegas Sun in an interview about hitting “rock bottom a few years ago” prior to his sports betting upswing in 2015.
