A poker player in the U.K. will have to spend three years behind bars for attacking and biting off part of the ear of a fellow poker player.

According to the Ipswich Star, Nicholas Salisbury, 27, challenged his opponent, Robert Reed, to a physical fight during a poker tournament in January 2014. Reed declined to step outside for the fight, but a short time later while he was outside having a cigarette, Salisbury attacked him. A punch to the face knocked Reed to the ground.

When Reed stood up, Salisbury put him in a headlock and proceeded to bite off part of his ear, leaving permanent disfigurement.

It was said in court that Reed became aware of what had happened to his ear only after Salisbury spit out the piece, which landed on the ground.

Salisbury pleaded guilty and was able to avoid a harsher sentence.

“Unfortunately when you have too much to drink you behave aggressively,” Judge Rupert Overbury said to Salisbury in court. "Your attack on Mr. Reed was unprovoked and extremely violent. Every time he looks in the mirror he will be reminded of that evening.”

The bad blood between the poker players began earlier in the evening when Salisbury began swearing at Reeds’ friends for no apparent reason.
