Australia’s gambling industry is at record levels, with people in the country having spent A$24.1 billion on gambling over the past 12 months, according to a report from Bloomberg.

That’s nearly $17.4 billion in USD and an increase of six percent year-over-year.

An average of A$1,000 is lost by every person in the country each year. Australians are the biggest spenders on gambling in the world, according to the report.

For comparison, the US commercial and tribal casino industries combined win roughly $67 billion from gamblers on an annual basis. The global gambling industry is estimated to be a $423 billion market.

Sixty seven Aussies participated in this year’s World Series of Poker main event, which was the 8th most out of any country. The country has seven major poker rooms.
