The poker community’s arch-nemesis is the new owner of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Las Vegas Sands owner Sheldon Adelson, who is still trying to see a federal online gaming ban pushed through Congress, had his son-in-law lead the $140 million purchase, the Review-Journal reported this week.
“Our motivation for purchasing the R-J is simple,” the Adelson family said in a statement. “We believe in this community and want to help make Las Vegas an even greater place to live. We believe deeply that a strong and effective daily newspaper plays a critical role in keeping our state apprised of the important news and issues we face on a daily basis.”
Adelson has a net worth of nearly $25 billion and has pledged to spend “whatever it takes” to ban online casino games nationwide. He has also backed efforts to stall the spread of the games in the current state-by-state patchwork that has been unfolding over the past several years.
Earlier this month, the House Oversight & Government Reform Committee held what was supposed to be a largely anti-online poker hearing, but the hearing turned sour toward the end for Rep. John Chaffetz (R-Utah), sponsor of the legislation dubbed “RAWA.”
