The state of Michigan is considering legalizing and regulating online casino games, but in the meantime it’s giving its online lottery a boost.

The Michigan Lottery said that starting this week players are able to use PayPal to fund their accounts, a major addition to the roughly 16-month-old online lottery in the state. Michigan was one of the first in the country to bring lottery games to the web.

According to the AP, the Michigan online lottery offers more than 30 unique games with plays ranging from five cents to $20. You can win up to $500,000 online.

More than 276,000 people in the state have registered to play the online games.

The same federal government action allowed for Michigan to have an online lottery and eventually pursue online casinos. In late 2011, the Department of Justice re-interpreted the decades-old Wire Act to allow for states to bring the lottery to the Internet, as well as authorize intra-state real-money online casino games.

The Michigan online gambling bill was introduced last week and would allow commercial and tribal gambling facilities to apply for licenses to run the sites.

In August, a Native American tribe with casino gambling in Michigan stopped making revenue sharing payments with the state because of the online lottery.

Though Michigan has an online lottery, it won’t be going the same route as Delaware. The latter regulates online casino sites through its lottery.
