Just two weeks after taking down the World Series of Poker Circuit Horseshoe Council Bluffs main event Maurice Hawkins stormed to victory again, topping a massive field of 1,008 entries to win the 2016 WSOP Circuit Harrah’s Cherokee $1,675 no-limit hold’em main event for $279,722 and his seventh circuit gold ring.
Hawkins’ win was historic in that it made him the first player in the 12-year history of the WSOP Circuit to ever win consecutive main event titles. He has had an incredible run on the circuit this April, winning three titles, making four final tables and cashing for $431,561.
“I am all about trying to put out my best performance and doing the best I can do,” Hawkins told WSOP reporters after the win.
Hawkins came into his previous final table in the lead and looking to run away with the title. This time around he entered the final ten in eighth chip position, but was able to rebuild and by the time the final hand arose he held roughly a 4-to-1 chip advantage over eventual runner up Leif Force.
On the final hand Force opened to 400,000 from the button with blinds of 80,000 – 160,000 with an ante of 20,000. Hawkins made the call and the flop brought the J43 and Hawkins check-called a bet of 400,000. The A hit the turn and Hawkins check-called again, this time for 650,000. The river completed the board with the 2 and Hawkins moved all in. Force thought it over for a while before making the call with the QQ only to have Hawkins show the A2 for two pair. With that Hawkins locked up the pot and the title and sent Force to the rail with $172,943.
